pL Stream of Consciousness

End of an Era I'm putting a long overdue fork in postLogica and calling it done. Since July 14, 2000 when postLogica first started, the Internet has evolved drastically. Social networking has taken off like wildfire with services such as Facebook and Twitter leaving less and less reason to continue a redundant and aging service like postLogica. I feel that post frequency more than supports this decision.

Since that simple beginning in July 2000, we've shared numerous experiences, thoughts and emotions here on postLogica. I'm filled with nostalgia while reading back through the archives of posts from years past and treasure everyone's contributions over the last decade.

I'm proud to have shared so much with such a fine group of people, my friends.

I love you all.

< I can post too! > Yes, it most certainly has been a while... Things have been good though. I've been keeping busy with work. A-M and I just added some functionality to the highlandseast.ca website ... and by A-M and I ... I mean A-M.

I just ordered myself a new and oh so quiet Xbox 360, so I'm looking forward to that arriving despite having very little time to play games. I do a lot of video watching with it though, so having a silent Xbox alleviates my need to find a fancy (and expensive) bluray player capable of DLNA streaming.

Mo and I are taking a vacation next week. We are driving out to Halifax via Maine. So I'm really looking forward to that. She's gonna show me her old stomping grounds. We'll stomp some new ground too I imagine.

I'm currently downloading the new iOS4 for my iPod touch. I'm hoping for a new iPod Touch to be released in the coming months as I'm due for an upgrade. Dust between the glass and screen is driving me nuts. I'd really like an iPhone 4, but the absence of cell coverage in the Wilberdome makes that a really stupid investment.

Hope everyone is doing well. Later.

It's been a while...

So yeah.. as per title.. it's been a while. I was the last to post in need of a job. I got one (woot woot) that will sustain me for the summer and provide me with income goodness. One more semester of actual school left and during that semester I will find out what I can do with my apartment. Ie: when I will give it up. Whether I can give it up for January 1st or have to keep it for longer I'm not sure. One more year left of school ZOMG!

Summer is going well so far, not just for me but seemingly for a lot of people.

Anywho I just thought I'd post something since it'd been a while and the last post was me soliciting for information regarding anyone knowing about what jobs were available!

So far so good! June's not far from over wholly.

I still need to go fishing.

Looking for a Job.

So the summer is fast approaching and I'm jobless at the moment. I should hopefully be hearing back from potential employers in the next week or so but I am antsy as to whether or not I'm going to get any the positions I applied to and I just want to have a ton of backup just in case. Mo has given me some suggestions that I may have to follow through on but I just wanted to throw it out there to see if any of you guys knew of any jobs that may not be posted and might have to get into the job a different way.

Anyway otherwise I am just wrapping up my term. Can't wait for it to be over to be honest I'm in need of a loonngg vacation. To think I'll be done my second year! One more year and I'll have a degree!! (Finally! lol). It's been a long time coming and I'm pretty proud of myself.

Anywho I've still got stuff to do before bed so I'll just hang it up at that.
Hope y'all had a happy Easter!

< Happy Birthday to me > Wow, I'm 29 ... it feels ... pretty much the same. Other than I'm that much closer to being 30. Ouch. Birthday wishes have been rolling in through various means and I just had to give a little shout out via our much beloved, but neglected of late, postLogica.

My birthday this year falls on Easter ... or Zombie Jesus Day as we've taken to calling it ... although I'm still figuring out if there is in fact a difference between Jesus Zombie and Zombie Jesus ... I think there is. I've spent the long weekend with @eri- ... I mean, Mo ... a couple days at her place with Lil'Mo and the family (it never ceases to amaze me how welcome and comfortable they make me feel when I'm there) and a couple days here with my peeps; we are all going out to dinner later for my birthday ... should be fun.

Between work and enjoying life, I've been super busy. Last weekend I had a big job in Toronto, so I took Mo with me and we made a weekend out of it. The weekend before that we celebrated her birthday in Pembroke and next weekend we're off to Ottawa. Whirlwind!

To sum up, I'm one lucky fucker and this is the best birthday ever. I love all you pL-ers. postLogica FTW!

PS: I want an iPad for my birthday.

Happy belated birthday!

How about I get you a magnifying lens for your iPod touch? It's basically the same as an iPad. ;)
Haji • April 05, 2010 • 9:37 am
Thanks dude. I think I'll pass on the magnifying glass though...

A worthy cause
So I've been doing my co-op at Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., working in the library at Chalk River. AECL is a Crown Corporation, so it is owned by the Federal Government. You've probably heard in the news that AECL is going to be sold off, but that Chalk River Laboratories is going to remain under the ownership of the Government of Canada.

At this point, there doesn't seem to be much of a plan for Chalk River. However, a group of scientists has presented a proposal to Ottawa to bring Chalk River Labs back to the national laboratory status that it had before it was merged with AECL. This includes partnering with universities, diversifying research (so, beyond just nuclear research), providing a training ground for new science graduates, and building a new reactor for research and medical isotopes.

I keep thinking how, when I graduated Waterloo, something like a national science laboratory would have changed my career path. I think having a national lab with such a focus would have been a real game changer. Don't get me wrong, I am happy with the path I wound up on... but to think of young scientists going through the system now, I think this is something that could be immensely beneficial to them, and to Canada.

So, if you have a moment, and you think this is important, please visit the link below. Have a read, sign the petition, and maybe something really really good will come out of this.

Please pass it on to anyone you think will be interested.

I'd like to add that this plan also includes getting a new research reactor built, which makes the fairly scarce (due to breakdowns of the current reactor) isotopes used in medicine for testing, like the kind my grandfather needs for cancer screenings. So go sign that shit!
LilMo • February 06, 2010 • 8:11 pm
I'll sign it!! That opens up coop and job opportunities for us Animal Research technicians as well! (I think?) even so I will still sign it for the benefit of others :D
AlphaMatrix • February 12, 2010 • 4:10 pm
I signed the other week. Just promise to use it for good and not evil (against me), alright? ;)
Mo • February 14, 2010 • 6:43 pm
No worries. My quest for world domination will likely culminate while the rest of the world is captivated by this tv show they call 'LOST'. I'll make sure you get a cushy government job and lots of free time. ;)

< Still Alive > Well, I can't say that this was a triumph, but I'm alive. Gallbladder is out. Good riddance!

The day started out with a Betty White-esque nurse failing to get an IV started and sending my chart to the anesthetist with an incorrect notation that I'd fainted ... I'm fairly certain this led him to skimp on the narcotics during the operation, which led to me "coming to" in extreme, 20 out of a scale of 10, pain.

I'd never heard the term "alligatoring" before, until the recovery room nurse used it to describe my rolling around on the bed. I'd blacked out for this part, only remembering the tail end of things with 6+ nurses and doctors surrounding me doing crazy ER stuff. I was put on oxygen after a cocktail of the three most potent narcotics available (Two does of Morphine, two doses of Dilaudid and a final, single dose of Fentanyl.) messed up my lung function.

Anywho, I'm feeling better today, however my recovery will be slower than normal, because my abdominal muscle was torn and there was some problems separating my Gallbladder from my Liver. So, I'm a bit of a hurtin' unit, but I'm on my way to recovery and glad to be on the other side of this.

Glad to hear that you survived and are recovering. Too bad about the complications though.
Ion • January 30, 2010 • 4:20 pm
Wow man, glad to hear you are ok! That almost sounds as bad as when I had my operation on my testicles! Now that's pain!
Haji • January 31, 2010 • 8:14 am
Wow ... way to make me feel better Ion. Nice. Feeling much better today, and everyone has been so awesome... I have the best bunch of peeps to call friends and family. I'm one lucky fuck.

< Scheduled > Went to see the surgeon today. My attacks are bad and frequent enough that I am a rush job. So I'm going under the knife next Wednesday. This is awesome. I never thought I'd get such fast action. Downsides? I'm out of commission for at least a couple weeks, maybe more. So I've had to postpone some plans with Mo, and tweak my work schedule. And, to add insult to injury, it is on the big Apple announcement day, so I'll miss the live blogging and such. Yeah ... I'm weird.

Into the New Year So its now 2010. Can't say I'd imagine what it would be like to actually feel like your living in the future, remembering all those awesome sci-fi movies and comics you read as a kid. And here we are, actually living in the time those fond memories took place as a youth. Alas I'm disappointed somewhat at the lack of robots walking around and flying cars lol.

Anyhooo....I got a PS3 for christmas! Haven't had a console system in months since my xbox died and got dissected from a not so skilled surgeon in electronics ha! So far I only have Dragon Age and both God of War games for it.

Anyways just wanted to verbally smear some of my thoughts out there to yous! Hope everyone is doing good! Nice to hear from Jarek too!

Um...the images I remember this looking like are Terminator, Robocop, Escape from New York etc. I can't say I'm too disappointed by the lack of robots and what not.
Haji • January 13, 2010 • 8:22 pm
PS3 huh ... damn. I've toyed with getting one, mainly as a media & bluray player, and for a couple of the A-list exclusive games. But I don't have the time to play all the 360 games I want. It'll suck not ever having you on Xbox Live again ...
